v4.0 / Re: Crasters Keep Bug
September 01, 2018, 07:03:03 PM
I've had this happen as well.

I don't think changing to no cheats or enabling cheats has anything to do with it.

I believe the last time it happened I was in a town and resting when the message occurred and I wasn't able to select "let's go". On another play through I was out in the field and it worked fine.

Speaking of things locking up. When I build my first ship and go to name it if I start to type before I've made sure the cursor prompt is in the dialogue box it removes the ship screen and prevents me from exiting the dock area or the city. I can move around a little bit and the names of my companions appears but I can't do anything else.

Like the prison glitch where there is no door and everything is scrambled the easy fix is to save the game where you are and reload. You'll appear outside the city or castle.

Havn't found a fix for the Craster's Keep quest though. But not resting for long periods in cities seems a good preventative.

I think they act like regular companions if you lose. I haven't tested it myself but I figure some get captured and some get lost in the cities and you have to ransom or find them again.

Lose a battle and see what happens. Save first.

Thanks. I'm using 3.6.

The mule and pack camel still say bonus to IM and my character screen says I'm getting a point but my inventory isn't bigger so it's still in there. That's too bad though. It would have been really useful.

This unit is supposed to give some bonuses but I've never actually seen the unit in the game. Is this unit in the game under a different name?

Also, do the Soldier's Wives actually give a bonus to morale? It takes 30 of them but I've never seen it happen.

The mule and the pack camel do not increase inventory management. I have the same number of spaces in inventory with them as without. I do see in my character page that the skill "inventory management" is green which means I have 1 point added to it, but I don't actually have more space in inventory.

And while I'm at it does anyone know how to get the skirmish order to work? The manual says f6 but that doesn't do anything.

Val doesn't like Hibald.

A World of Ice and Fire / Re: Best Troops
July 21, 2018, 02:29:49 AM
In the latest version Elite NW Rangers are not so great. They are more of an infantry unit that carries a hunting bow. Not exactly the kind of unit you want to devastate an enemy line with arrow fire. And they are very expensive. Around 60 stags a week.

My favorite faction is Stormlands. Pack their infantry tight together in shield wall and no cavalry can penetrate them. They'll wreck every unit on the field. And I like their knights. I don't upgrade the knights to House troops as it's not really worth it for me. These troops carry blunt weapons so you will take more prisoners and more prisoners means more money and more money means better equipment for your companions and more troop upgrades. You can't go wrong with Stormland infantry and horse. I don't care much for their archers (if you can even call them that).

As for bows I don't really prefer the Riverlands. They don't get the longbow until the last tier and by then you are in for at least 2000 stags upgrade cost. For me I'd rather capture tiger cloak archers off of bandits and train them up. They get their war bow at tier 5 whereas Riverlands don't get it until 6. Until then it's a hunting bow and then a short bow. Meh.

But none of you mentioned the Lyseni archer or the Lyseni troops in general. Of all the factions they are the ones with the highest skills in the game. Their archers get the longbow by level 5 and have almost 300 skill. That's almost as good as Faceless men but at a fraction of the price. Their infantry is also pretty good. Good armor at top tier and they have curved swords. Curved. Swords!

Someone said the Reach had the best all around troops. I have to differ. Their knights are pretty well armored but their infantry is mediocre. Their archers have the longbow but their skill is low. They are good enough and cheap enough to man a wall but they are fodder in the field. If I catch 600 Reach units at a bridge I can destroy them easily with 200 Stormland troops and some Tiger Cloak Archers. The bridge just North of Riverlands is a good one. They also spawn on the other side and their archers are behind a little hill. They can't use them to shoot at my troops but I can position mine just fine. On the bridge their cavalry is dead meat.

I've not much experience with the Vale. I'm tempted to go try them out. From what I've seen though their archers aren't much to speak of and I don't think their top tier armor for other troops is that great.

I do like a good spear wall and the North has some good spears but Unsullied are much better. Lighter, faster, more skilled, with a throwing weapon and that damn Falchion. Many don't realize how effective a short weapon like that is in close combat. If I wasn't in love with the Dog Cudgel I'd have a falchion.

As for the Faceless Men they are very expensive. Prohibitively so. However, when you take Braavos you have an opportunity to capture quite a few of them. If you use Stormland troops to take the city you'll get a lot more Faceless men than if you troops from other factions.

Consider taking Braavos and then capturing the Faceless Men and then just sacking the place and leaving. They'll make more Faceless men and you can come back later and get some more. I've not done this because I don't know what happens long term when you sack a city, but it's worth trying if you want a lot of really good troops for free.

While we're at it, does Jon ever become King in da North?

I've heard there is a Red Wedding but I haven't gotten that far in my current Static play through.

Do you mean kill him or knock him out?

What do you mean by the "main quest"? I've gotten as far as Crastor's Keep quest but no option to kill Jon Snow.

I'm just curious. I don't really need Longclaw and if I have to kill JS then it's definitely not worth it. He's had it hard enough without me stabbing him in the back.

"A hefty sum"

Worth. Every. Penny.

Keep them in a shield wall and they'll wreck much better armored foes. Their short Falchions are perfect for shield wall work.

And no upkeep. One time fee of 1500 a soldier. It would take many days and at least that much to upgrade a Northern Spearman or a Dornish Heavy Spear and these guys are better. Maybe not as well armored but very versatile and fast.

My only question is how long to wait to buy more? 1 week? 1 month?

face him in battle, with your own guys, find him in the field, take him down, and take his sword. it should be in the loot menu after

Does it matter if I'm a king or just a mercenary or in someone's army? What if I'm in the Lord Commander's Army and I wack him from behind and take his weapon? (that actually works in ACOK). What if I just pick a fight one day and then pay a fine to the NW the next day?

And by "take his sword" do you mean find the sword on the ground and pick it up and then it will appear in inventory?

I've taken the Shadow Tower, East Watch, and Castle Black from the Wildlings.

I gave Shadow Tower to Podrick and he's now fielding Night's Watch Troops. I want him to field Stormland troops since that is the culture I've chosen. When I recruit from any village I get Stormland troops.

Is there a way to get my companion lords to produce the troops that belong to the faction? At the least I was hoping he would produce troops from his own home town which a lot of other mods do. I figured that when he went to gather support those would be the troops he'd most likely produce. Same with all the other companions.

I plan on taking over everything but I can't do that with Night's Watch and Wildling troops.

I was playing the other day and my RTR was -650. I thought maybe it was because I was a mercenary at the time, but I started a new game and never found out.

You could try cheat mode. I think there is an option to increase RTR.

But I don't know why your RTR keeps going down.

I usually get them by looking for a party of broken men wandering around Essos. It's not always easy to find but if you find one you can usually get at least one bow from them. If that doesn't work attack a caravan. You can get a bow like that and then pay a fine to Volantis to make peace (not sure if they would accept but I don't see why they wouldn't).

Occasionally, Robber Knights or Knight Exiles will have Tiger Cloak Archers in their ranks and they may drop them.

If that doesn't work then train about 10 of them, get them to the point where they start carrying the bow, then join a battle with some bandits against bandits and choose the side with the least men or who will receive the least amount of prisoner recruits. Then put all your slide all your TC Archers over to their side and they will add them to their ranks. Then attack them and kill them all and hopefully the bow will drop.

I recall in previous versions that the Dothraki Raiders had War Bows. They don't have them in 3.0, sadly. They were more scary then but now not so much.

There is also a bow called a Strong Bow. It has 99 accuracy but can only be used on foot. No idea who drops it but I got one while fighting mixed bandits near Highgarden. IIRC it does pierce damage, and is faster than the War Bow.

It drops but it's rare.

I got some Stannis Plate (or something like that) when I took Dragonstone. There were 150 Queen's Men in there and they wear the SP I believe.

That's the bad thing about this mod. You have to either choose to get prisoners or choose to get loot.
