Almost caught up to them towards the bottom of the peninsula, where the mouth of the Rhoyne starts opening up and the town of Volantis is directly on the other shore when the stinking slavers pulled boats out of their...backpacks...and got away
But to my surprise, my horse icon kept following them across the Rhoyne and I wound up in the town of Volantis
while they were on their ships in the bay 
Now, while I applaud my soldiers diligence and ingenuity
the game has never been that kind to our little band of try hards, so I exited and reverted to my last save.
