When your lord who you've enlisted in is defeated, you are taken prisoner. However, there is no quest added stating that you must rejoin your lord or else you will be counted as a deserter. After you have been escaped your captors and returned to your lord, he will act as if you have never been a part of his retinue and once you've enlisted again, he will give you the equipment befitting of your rank as before.
