I tend towards hire them all, then whittle it down by appointing people as vassal or other position, then release leftovers until stable party.

Nope, doesn't make them happy, so you would have to pay them every week, and eventually it would be every companion, 7040 each, every week.

Noted, I don't think I could make that much with all enterprises, max looting, trade, and inventory going for hardcore cash grabbing, so need to decide who I want beforehand sounds like.

Odd. I've been doing everything you said this whole time and I came here to post because that wasnt working. No one could possibly escape in the time it takes me to cheat them down, I initiate or them, no difference. I get the convo at the start to fight them or leave, cheat ko whole army, choose how I want to deal with loot, then it goes back to world map and quest won't advance. Don't know what else to say though, I was already doing all of that the whole time.

Weird. That made no difference at all for me. Cheated just to check, koed everyone in first second, no possibility of escape, still fails, doesn't behave any differently. Do we need to literally kill them, as in if any are just wounded or unconscious we've already failed? As so far doing exactly what you said doesn't make any difference.

I still fail when I do that, I've even tried cheat ko whole enemy group. So that's probably part of it. Did they initiate or you?

I've literally cheated and mass knocked out everyone first second, still same result. Make sure no one escapes might be part of it somehow, but that alone doesn't seem to be enough. Or by kill do you mean kill, as in every single one must die, no one can be koed, because that's lame, as even using swords and other lethals, you get some prisoners. Or do we need space for all prisoners too, or else they are treated as escapes?

Can we just marry her instead? New to this version so havent tried.

Im having this same problem, playing 2.2, fought using only blunt, even tried cheating, attacking them, letting them attack me, after the fight, no conversation, no book, no quest update, returning to beric just makes him mad.

First post, new member, joined because this has been frustrating me for a while now. Im having this exact same problem, had it before 2.0,  and still having it now with most recent steam version, whether I attack tickler or he attacks me, I fight, win, no conversation of any kind afterwards, no book, returning only pisses off beric.
