Well maybe Produno can help me with this. It looks like changing the global variable background_trait did not do anything. Is there an additional slot, or an event that gets called in the beginning of the game that checks what the background_trait is and sets it? I don't have access to the source code, and won't be much help until I get a response. But I tried :/

Yes you can edit it. Upload your savefile (It's in documents, Mount&Blade Warband Savegames, AWOIAF, sgxx.sav) and post the upload link here.
